English Grade 9

Writing assignment: 500 words on this topic: Which is most important in writing dialogue from memory: accuracy, succinctness, or liveliness? Why?

In his book, The Persecutor, Sergei Kourdakov uses strong writing to pull you in to his book. From the first words of the 1st chapter, he hooks you in. “It was a dark and stormy night”. He then goes on to narrate the end of his story first, his desperate struggles for freedom and then suddenly you are taken back to the beginning of his life in Russia. His writing was very strong and it is one of the best books I’ve ever read.

But back to the question in hand: Which is most important in writing dialogue from memory: accuracy, succinctness, or liveliness?

First, what do those mean? I had to look up and make sure before I even began to think about it, so I will make it easier for you:

  1. Accuracy: Correct facts and Precision.
  2. Succinctness: Being able to express a strong meaning in a just few words.
  3. Liveliness: Animation, Action and Energy in Expression.

Kourdakov has accuracy in his book, and he gives many facts. Those facts are important, but in writing from memory, people are more interested in what you remember, rather than exact facts. That does not mean you should lie, but it is not as important as the other two in my opinion, as long as you stick as close to the facts as you can remember and give facts throughout the book or piece you are writing. Because this is your book, you don’t need to freak out about accuracy.

Succinctness is very important. If you can’t say what you are wanting to say in short sentences or in ways that make your reader want to read more, why are you writing it? If you take too long to explain something, or if you are not interesting, your reader will loose interest. In his book, Kourdakov writes in such a way, that while writing the facts of what happen, he expresses a meaning clear and to the point. It can be a deep meaning or something that makes you think about what is happening in a different way. Explaining how your father hit a dog one day on his way to work gets the point across, but it does not mean as much as if you would have simply said: “One day before work, my Father hit a dog with his car.”

Liveliness: I think this is also very important. What is your writing talking about? Will it interest and grab the reader’s attention? Is your story exciting and humorous? It is suspenseful and down to earth? What would you want to read more of if it was you reading this book for the first time? You need Liveliness to express your thoughts and the events happening in a clear way. End some of your chapters with a cliffhanger, make the reader turn the page to find out more.

I think all three are important but Liveliness and Succinctness are the most important and you need accuracy to help.
