Weather Week 2 Review
Lesson: 140
Write a 150-word article on the wind, pressure systems or both.
Wind is air in motion. There are three forces that drive surface wind. Pressure Gradient Force, Coriolis Force, and Friction. Let’s take a gander at each:
- Pressure Gradient: It is the change in pressure over distance. High Pressure areas forcing air towards Low Pressure areas.
- The Coriolis Effect: The influence of Earth’s rotation on objects not attached to the surface. It is greatest at the poles. It has no influence at the equator. Low pressure cells in the Northern Hemisphere from above are traveling slower than High Pressure cells and the get pushed behind while the air from below is pushed ahead. It is the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. That is why storms and hurricanes in the north spin counter clockwise and in the south spin clockwise. The winds at the equator move faster than winds in the north and south hemispheres.
- Friction: Caused by plants and topography. Anything slowing the wind down.
