Science Project: Conservation Section.

Hey Guys,

Science

Lesson: 127

Experiment

8/29/2022-8/30/2022

Today I am going to be posting my results on a science project that I did. I got the Idea and instructions from this article here:

https://www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/desalination

I had never done this before and I wanted to give it a try. The idea is to collect water from dew-drops in the morning.

1st Step: Consult the Reference

I was obviously not going to dig that large of a hole for such a small experiment but I did have an idea of my own.

2nd Step: Gather and Prepare Supplies and Tools

I used a shovel to dig the hole, a cut up piece of Walmart bag as a cover, a small meatal bowl to collect the water and some stones and wood pieces to hold down the plastic bag.

3rd step: Dig the Hole

Image 3

I dug the hole then placed the bowl at the bottom.

Image 4

When I tried to cover the hole with the plastic I discovered it was too large for my piece of cut bag, so I filled the hole up and dug a smaller one in the center of it.

Image 5

Even that was too big for my plastic so I went inside and cut another piece, It was too small as well so I finally went and just cut the bag in half. It was just big enough.

4th Step: Cover the Hole

Image 6

I covered the hole, weighed down the sides and place a stone on the top to push down the middle. Actually, here is where I made my mistake but more on that in a moment.

I did this in the late afternoon and then left it till this morning.

5th Step: Check for Results

When I woke up this morning I went outside to check on my water collection experiment.

I almost immediately realized my mistake when I saw it.

I should have poked a hole in the middle of the plastic sheet so the water could filter through to the bowl below. Instead it pooled up in the center and the bowl was bone dry.

Image 11

I poured the water into the bowl to see how much I collected.

Image 12

I got a fair amount and I would still call this experiment a success.

Bye Guys!
