Mulching!

Soooooooo, mulching?

How many people know what mulching is?

Raise your hand if you do………. Ok I count at least….. 1 person who does.

Mulching is a very helpful tool to know about and use in your garden or around your plants.

Here are some ways mulching helps your garden:

  1. It keeps your soil moist and not dry and crackled.
  2. It can attract helpful insects.
  3. It limits weeds.
  4. It keeps the soil, and your plant roots, cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  5. it helps keep the soil dry enough so that your roots and plants don’t drown and rot.
  6. It makes your garden look nice and put together depending on the type of mulch you use.
  7. It increases the growth of your plants and their roots.
  8. It makes nutrients as it decomposes!

Here is a picture of mulch:

Here are some pictures of plants with mulch:

There are two main different types of mulch:

Organic and Non-Organic

Organic mulch is made from plants and nature like:

  1. Bark bits
  2. Shavings
  3. Grass clippings
  4. Newspaper
  5. Chopped pieces of wood
  6. Compost

Non-Organic mulch is made of things like:

  1. Marbles
  2. Stones
  3. Rocks
  4. Garden paper (Man-Made)
  5. Rubber chips/pieces (Man-Made)
  6. Gravel

It is better for your garden if you use Organic mulches but Non-organic mulches have their pros:

They do not deteriorate as fast as Organic ones do. And animals and weather move them about less.

When using mulch make sure to leave about 2-3 inches between it and the plant stem.

If you are using Coarse, big mulch like bark bits or stones make a layer of it about 4 inches deep.

If you are using Fine, small mulch like compost or shavings make the layer about 2 or 3 inches deep.

Make sure you leave about 6 to 12 inches of space between buildings and mulch.

I hope you learned a bit about mulching and using it!

Weeding!

I’m sure you know what this is!

Weeds can be a Huge problem because they:

  1. They can look nasty.
  2. They are invasive!
  3. They take up space that your garden plants need.
  4. They block sunlight from small plants.
  5. They can have stickers and burrs and those get stuck to your clothes and are a nuisance.

Weeds are unwanted plants!

How can you get rid of them without using chemicals and sprays though????

There are a lot of reasons why you should not use sprays and chemicals:

  1. You can kill good bugs!
  2. You can kill your own plants!
  3. You can harm the soil for a long time!
  4. Chemicals and sprays are not good for the environment!
  5. Sprays and chemicals are not good or people to breath in and be around!
  6. Animals can eat the weeds that you have sprayed and then maybe die! Or at least get sick!

Those are just a few reasons.

Here are some ways to get rid of weeds in your garden:

  1. You can pull them up one by one, but unless you have a small garden that will take a long time and even if you do have a small garden it is still hard work.
  2. Before you make your garden you should mow and till the soil.
  3. Weed weekly and that will limit the weeds.
  4. If you have animals like sheep, goats, cows, horses, or any others that eat plants, You can let them eat all the grass and weeds down before you till the soil. That saves you mowing time.
  5. Mulching will keep weeds from growing!

DON’T WORRRY ABOUT GETTING EVERY WEED PULLED! They will still grow no matter what you do! So if you have a few don’t start panicking and running to the store to buy weed killers!

I hope you Will consider these options before going with man-made things and chemicals that are harmful!

Pest Control!

That is a biggie right!???!?!

Not really though.

Here is a picture of a plant that has been eaten by pests:

Look at it and then think about what should be done

  1. Should you try too kill all the pests?
  2. Or should you not take any action?
  3. You make a conclusion and then look at my answer!
What Pest Is Eating Holes in My Plant Leaves?

This leaf looks terrible right?

It clearly has problems right?

WRONG!

It has nothing to do with the looks!

It has to do with how the plant in whole looks.

Is it still producing? Or does it look wilted and sick?

It is still green? Or is it yellow and brown?

Now those are the questions to ask and find answers too.

You might not want your plant to look like that though, even if it is healthy and well.

What do you do?

Buy some bug spray and spray like your life depends on it?

Or go with a natural solution?

It is much, much better to go with a natural solution then a chemical or spray!

Here is why:

  1. You can kill off good helpful bugs.
  2. Bug killers are not good for you to breath in.
  3. They are not good for other animals.

In stead go with a natural solution like:

  1. Soapy water.
  2. Garlic oil Spray.
  3. Nem Tree Extract.
  4. Potatoe slices.
  5. Milky Spore.
  6. Yellow sticky Fly paper.
  7. Chickens.
  8. No-Lo Bait.
  9. Aaaaaaaaa……. Fence!
  10. Reflective tape and pots.

That sound like a lot right? I am going to tell you what each of those is used for.

Remember pests can be big animals like deer, raccoons, and birds.

So first you have to find out what type of pest you are dealing with. Bugs? Deer? Birds?

Ants can be a problem for plants as well as other bugs. I had a problem with ants this past year. I used soapy water to keep them away. What does it do? Well, soapy water first off can drown and kill the ants, second it makes their exoskeleton soft and that means they are not as protected as they used to be from the outside elements.

Maybe you have a problem with aphids? Well, spraying bug spray can kill ladybugs, Dragonflys, Damselflys, Wasps, and spiders. Those good bugs all eat aphids.

You can use a garlic oil spray or a soapy water spray to kill and harm the aphids without Hurting the good bugs.

A word of caution, You can not kill off every bug. Don’t worry if there are a few. Just like with weeds, it’s not a big deal.

Beetles are also a bad pest. Use a spray like for aphids or try to attract bugs that eat beetles.

Grasshoppers and Crickets are very very bad. You can use No-Lo Bait or Nem Tree Extract. Those will make them sluggish and any healthy ones that eat the sick one will also get sick. But make sure they are safe to use in your garden before trying that.

You Can use birds and Chickens to eat the grasshoppers and crickets instead. But be careful. Chickens can dig up your garden and plants.

What about slugs and snails? To get rid of them:

Slice potatoes and place them near the plants the slugs or snails are hurting. Them in the early morning go and pick up the slices that have snails or slugs on them and take them far away from your garden it will take them a long time to return if they even do.

Sticky yellow fly traps can kill bad bugs, But they also can trap and get rid of good bugs.

If you have a problem will grubs then you can get a mix that kills grubs called Milky Spore

It is a bacteria and it kills the grubs and all you need is about two coats of it on your garden and lawn and it reproduces itself and will kill grubs year after year!

What about big bad pests?

To keep deer, birds, and raccoons out you can use reflective tape and pots, pans, anything that makes noise to scare them away. If you put strong smelling soap bars in your garden it make deer stay away because they don’t like the smells.

But the one sure way that a professional gardener says is absolutely necessary to keeping deer and the like out

Issssssssssssss……………………..

A FENCE!

Yep a fence.

Make sure it is about 8ft tall though so deer can’t jump it.

I hope you learned a lot about Gardening.

Please tell me of errors and mistakes.

  1. The way I get the ants out of my lettuce bin is I pour boiling water into their holes. My Mom uses soapy water though. Hmm, I might try the sliced potatoes sometime! Thanks for the ideas! I think this will help with my garden! ❀ ❀ ❀
